Questions - and answers - about the Victorian Romantic Tarot Gold Edition

Is this really so limited? Will the Gold Edition ever be reprinted?

Yes, it really is a very limited edition - strictly 500 decks only will be made, with no reprints. The Victorian Romantic Tarot standard deck is open edition (i.e. it may be reprinted) but we won't reprint this Gold Edition, we want it to be very special.

Why did Magic Realist Press decide to produce these special limited editions?

Because as a small press we are very restricted in what we can add to enhance our standard tarots - to keep them to competitive bookstore prices we need to put all the production money into the cards and the book - there's simply none left over for the extra things we'd love to provide. We therefore decided to produce, in parallel with the standard edition, these much more lavish "Gold" productions, which we know some tarot enthusiasts will value.

Why is there no companion book with the Gold Edition?

Because we expect many buyers of our special edition tarots to be non-English speakers. For them it would be unfair to have to purchase a book that they can't use. We therefore decided to include the specially designed journals - something that can be used by anyone no matter what their primary language. There is a basic "little white booklet" of instructions and keywords included with all sets however..

But I want a book!

We will have some separate companion books available so that you can "add a book" to your order. There will be a special discount if you purchase the book from our online store at the same time as your purchase of a Gold Edition tarot.

Can I buy just the Gold Edition cards on their own?

No, we only have one version of the Gold Edition Set. This is because keeping it simple helps us to keep the cost down for everyone.

The price for a 500-print-run limited edition is very low - especially considering the free journal included. How and why?

Simply because these are printed and produced at the same time as our standard editions. This keeps the quality high but the cost as low as possible - we aim to make our publications as accessible as we can..

Will these tarots become valuable collectors' items?

We can't guarantee that! Many limited edition tarots do become highly collectible and we hope our Golden Editions will be sought after, but please don't buy the decks primarily as a financial investment. We'd like them to be used and enjoyed. In particular, we want the journals to be used, ideally, as creative and learning tools - not kept blank and pristine.

And while we're on the subject of the journals - how should I use mine?

Any way that you enjoy. We imagine that some people will use these for classic tarot journaling, while others may use them as general notebooks. As the quality of these books is exceptional, we hope that some may be used to make small art pieces full of collages and imagery. To support this, we intend to make some pages of free and copyright-free downloadable imagery available - these can be printed off and used in collage. We know that some exceptionally creative people use our decks so we look forward to seeing what you do with the journals.

I'm allergic to gold foil, can I use this deck?

Yes, we don't use foil. The gold is a very soft gold ink, which gives a beautiful, subtle and rather antique finish (see illustration here).

Hold your cursor over the card to see only the gold and black inks - this gives a good idea of where and how we are applying the gold inks . We're using gold as lavishly as possible without losing any detail in the image.
